Anesthesia Plans: A Practical Approach

By Martin Kennedy, DVM, DACVAA from Whiskers Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery

The nature of veterinary medicine often requires patients to be under general anesthesia even for noninvasive procedures or treatments, making general anesthesia an important part of daily practice. The anesthesia plan plays a critical role in being able to provide optimal patient care while avoiding and/or minimizing complications.

In this lecture, we will help you to:

  • Understand the general formula of an anesthesia plan.
  • Understand the advantages of premedication.
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of various drugs used in the peri-anesthetic period.
  • Be able to design anesthetic plans for a variety of patients.
